If you are looking for a graduate job, the agriculture sector is on your list. Commonly overlooked by young professionals and recent graduates, the agriculture industry has enormous benefits for launching your career with many personal and financial rewards. Want to know more?

Check out our five reasons why you should consider a career in agriculture!
1. Diverse Career Selection

The range of work within the Agriculture sector is immense no matter what you are studying, there will always be a job that aligns with your studies. Agriculture is not just about farming and cultivation practices, it requires diverse individuals with vast skill sets and knowledge. Agribusiness covers everything from farming and cultivation practices to stores, merchandising, and sales. From Marketing to Arts majors and even creative industries, degree and skills can be utilised within the agriculture industry.

For business and commerce majors, agribusiness has plenty of opportunities. Graduates are a key part of marketing products and accelerating the growth of companies. If your skillset is within the social sciences background, your insight, people skills, and drive will be beneficial to understanding consumer habits, market research, and analysing policy. For those with a bit of creative flair, the promotion and advertising of products require designers, strategy analysts, and more.

And if you have a skill set in Science, Technology, Mathematics, or, Engineering; you can apply these skills to improve and drive new technological innovations in the daily production of agricultural practices. There are plenty of opportunities to work towards e.g. improving equipment, lab work, and research, optimising the productivity of Agricultural practices, and helping to produce better products.

2. Great Employment Opportunity

The Agricultural Industry is booming! Especially here in New Zealand. Farming and horticulture are a core part of New Zealand’s economy. We export wool, dairy products, meat, and a range of crops from wine grapes, potatoes, and apples, to name a few. All of these products require a large workforce. From people working on-site on the farms, scientists to provide quality checks, assessors to view the process and procedures, and supply chain management workers to ensure that these products are being transported and delivered efficiently.

With so much variety and growth in this industry, the need for more workers increases every year. This becomes a great opportunity for graduate students. You get to be involved in agribusiness and be a part of a global industry, working locally and internationally. You don’t even need to have a degree in agriculture! Because there are so many different roles and options within agriculture, you are bound to find a job that suits your skills and passions.

3. High Tech Sector

Calling all Engineering and Science Students, if you are looking for a job that uses the latest technology, agriculture is for you. As consumer and market demand for products increases every year, this means our technology and practices also need to be super-efficient. More farmers are beginning to adopt technology such as GPS systems, GIS, drones, robotics, and more, to increase precision farming techniques and efficient food production.

Especially here in New Zealand, we drive to create more sustainable farming practices that produce cheaper food more safely and efficiently. The agricultural industry seeks ways to drive lower costs and increase output. All while ensuring that we are using technology that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Skills in Engineering and Advanced Science are in high demand within this sector, making it an opportunity for graduates to gain experience within this field. As well as students that are interested in environmental issues, conservation, and sustainability practices, your skills and insight will be highly valued.

4. Good Pay prospects

Where there is high market demand and fast-moving consumers, good money follows. If you are looking for a well-paying job, the agriculture business is a go-to. These companies seek students that are skilled and passionate, and in return provide you with a stable and strong starting income. If you are to excel and specialise in your chosen area with the agriculture industry, not only will that boost your employability but will also increase your income prospects. Many of these companies also provide additional benefits such as company cars, phone bills covered, and even accommodation. And if you choose to try out another field, all your specialist knowledge and experience will come in handy in a range of other industries.

5. You’ll be making a difference

With sustainability at its core, the agriculture industry drives to reduce its carbon footprint. Here in New Zealand, we are always looking for ways to use more energy-efficient options. As a part of your career in agriculture, you can help pave the way by implementing more sustainable agriculture practices. As you grow in your agriculture career, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference and improve agricultural practices daily. Whether you are improving working conditions for farmers and factory staff, ensuring the health and wellbeing of animals, or checking the quality of food produced. Your role will always be important to consumers worldwide and will contribute to the health of thousands of people.
