The 7 Things You Need to do Before Your Summer Internship Ends

If your summer internship is about to wrap up, check out these seven things you need to do before your internship ends!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Summer internships are enjoyable and rewarding in personal growth, expanding your network, and gaining new skills. If your summer internship is about to wrap up, check out these seven things you need to do before your internship ends!

1. Create a list of all the things you accomplished in your internship

Comply a list of all the projects you got to work on, what skills you developed and how you've grown as a person. Reflecting on your experiences is excellent for building your self-esteem and can help you verbalize all the skills and knowledge you've gained. Focus on the specific details and jot down a detailed recollection of your summer. The key points and thoughts reflected in these notes demonstrate your work ethic, a diversity of tasks and skills which can be altered and developed for job applications, interviews, resumes, personal statements and more!

2. Write down what you learned during your internship

Like number 1, it's a great idea to write down everything you've learnt. Consider types of software, soft skills and hard skills and the situations you got to apply these new skills.

A great way to record this is by using the STAR format –

S – List the Situation. Outline when you got to use these skills and what situation you were in

T – What was the task at hand? Were you working on a long-term project, or was this a one-off task to be completed?

A – Action. How did your actions and skills contribute to the outcome of the work?

R – Response – what happened next? Was the task completed? What feedback were you given? And what would you do differently for next time?

3. Make an action plan for how to apply this knowledge in your other work/ in a future role

If you enjoyed working with this company and trying out something in particular, now is a great chance to create a career action plan! If there is still training or development you need before entering this field, add it to your plan. A career action plan can be laid out in terms of capabilities, timeframes, work experiences and more. Have a look online for various ways of planning this out, or get in touch with your career services. Book a 1:1 appointment and get yourself a tailored career plan just for you!

4. Send out thank-you messages to everyone who helped you during your internship

If you want to work in this industry and field, these are your networks! As you conclude your internship, think about how you would like to say thank you to everyone. You could send out personalised notes, shout everyone a sweet treat, buy flowers for the team, or even go out for lunch together. Saying thank you and showing your appreciation highlights your work ethic and personality and can leave a life-long impression on your team. It's the small gestures that can make the most impact, so even if you decide to do something small – make it impactful and meaningful.

5. Update LinkedIn with new experience and achievements

LinkedIn is an excellent platform for showcasing all the skills and work experience you have gained! Share your career insights everything you've learnt, connect with the people you've worked with and share the photos you've taken. Not only will this add to your career profile, but you will get to engage and connect with a broader network of people. You can also showcase your abilities to connections, potential employers, and more. LinkedIn is a digital portfolio showcase and highlight your skills and achievement and seek opportunities to further your growth.

6. Follow up with all the people you met while interning, including potential employers or mentors.

Depending on who and how you worked with your team, keep in touch with all of them. Simple gestures, like going out for coffee occasionally or even just sending an email with career updates, will maintain the strong relationship you've built over this summer. Make sure to include all of them in your LinkedIn profile and if you feel comfortable, reach out to them for a reference. Before you finish your internship, make sure to chat with your supervisor and discuss the next steps and potential for growth. Don't forget to keep them in the loop with opportunities you apply for and make yourself a stronger and more reliable candidate.
