Apiti Tavern & Eatery

Fancy a scenic weekend drive followed by lunch in a sunny garden bar? Look no further than the Apiti Tavern & Eatery – located 30 minutes out of Feilding and nestled in the countryside, at the gateway to the Ruahine Ranges. MOOMAA Cafe and Design Store

Located on State Highway One, MOOMAA Cafe and Design Store is the newest addition to our list. With a super stylish interior, outdoor courtyard, colorful cabinet food, and a delicious breakfast and lunch menu, MooMaa offer the perfect weekend outing – just half an hour from Palmerston North on the outskirts of Marton. While you’re enjoying your meals, make sure you browse the eye candy on display in the MOOMAA Design Store. They have a range of visually tantalizing furniture, homewares, wallpaper and fabrics, and owner Emma Shannon, a qualified Interior and Graphic Designer, is on hand to offer her design and consultation services.

Cheltenham Hotel

Classic rural pub? Tick. Some of the best fish and chips in Manawatu? Tick. Affectionately referred to as ‘The Chelty’ and located just 15 mins from Feilding, this historic watering hole is popular with locals and visitors alike. Originally built in 1876, the pub sits at the crossroads of Kimbolton Road and Cheltenham-Hunterville Road, a perfect stop off if you’re heading to Vinegar Hill or up through Kimbolton and on to northern Manawatu. The Chelty is also home to the annual speed shear competition – where once a year shearers’ from around the country flock to compete against one another in the lead up to the renowned Golden Shears.
Open Monday to Tuesday 4 pm – late, Wednesday to Friday 2 pm – late, Saturday to Sunday 11 am – late. Also available for private functions and bookings.

Hansen’s Cafe & Store

A peaceful and welcoming atmosphere awaits you at Hansen’s Cafe & Store, situated in the heart of Kimbolton Village. Dining is café style, offering fresh food made in-house and the service at Hansen’s is second to none. Within the café is a store that sells a range of handmade local Kimbolton products – and is featured in our piece on little shops that spark joy. Hansen’s is the perfect Saturday family day trip or stop off point when traveling between Taupo and Wellington.

Murray’s Irish Bar & Restaurant

Located in the heart of bustling Feilding and offering one of the best menus in town, Murray’s is a well known Feilding institution for a reason. With their famous $10 lunch menu, traditional Irish decor and live music on a Friday; Murray’s is popular with crowds young and old. Join the crowds for lunch on a Monday or Friday following the famous Feilding livestock sales, or for dinner, drinks and live music on a Friday evening.

The Herb Farm Gardens & Cafe

If you’re looking for an out of town brunch or lunch spot this summer you can’t go past The Herb Farm, located just 15 minutes out of Palmerston North in Ashhurst. Here, picnic tables are scattered throughout an idyllic garden and diners are served locally sourced, free-range and organic meals to the sound of birds and insects chirping. The Herb Garden is also home to a wide range of internationally acclaimed natural health and skincare products and offers ‘hands-on’ workshops where groups can create their own products to take home.

The Ashhurt Inn

Well known for their child-friendly atmosphere and ‘kids eat for free’ Wednesdays, excellent pub fare and great service The Ashhurst Innis the perfect place to gather with friends and family only 20 minutes outside the city. Capturing the essence of a quaint English countryside pub and offering a good covered outdoor area, the pub is a brilliant spot to socialize during the warmer months.
