We have an exciting opportunity for graduates to join our markets, data and insight and energy teams in 2021, located in our central Wellington office. Read on for information about our people, our values, the programme and how you can apply.

Our organisational values are the guiding lights for how we approach our roles and relationships at NZX.
At NZX, integrity is the foundation of everything we do. We are resilient; we evolve as the markets change. We are open to new ideas, new thinking, new people and new ways of doing business. We operate in a unique environment and we are creative in our approach to new challenges and opportunities. We deliver, we exceed and excel.
These are the values we believe in, and that we recognise and reward throughout the year with our Values Awards voted for by our colleagues. These culminate in an awards evening hosted by the Board where NZX’s Chair recognises a Supreme Award winner who has exemplified our values.

How the programme works

“You’re not just a ‘grad’, you’re a valued team member doing meaningful work that matters to our economy. You will gain hands-on experience in operating our markets for New Zealand and we’ll support you every step throughout the programme through mentorship, different learning opportunities and establishing a strong career."

We want to give you a wide range of experience at NZX.  In your first two years, you get the benefit of progressing through two different roles in different parts of the business, before landing in your permanent role in year three.  You might be a frontline analyst in the markets operations for year one, then an energy markets analyst in year two, then establish yourself into a team and role that marks the start of the rest of your career – the options are varied, and we’ll work with you on your financial markets career journey.
You will be based in our fantastic waterfront location in central Wellington.  We have open plan offices, so you can get to know people across the business, build your profile and explore ideas on where you might take your career.

Benefits of the programme
We are all about building our staff to be the best they can be.  As a part of the graduate programme, we offer formal and informal opportunities to help you grow:
  • Study options – we offer graduates the opportunity to complete the NZX diploma, which all brokers in the market must complete.  Or you might opt to complete your Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Professional Legal Studies course – we’ll support your chosen pathway, cover costs, and provide study leave.
  • Professional memberships – we cover the cost for you to join the Institute of Financial Professionals – a great way for you to build your wider network in the industry and attend industry events that will grow your network and your knowledge
  • Site visits  - NZX is at the heart of the wider financial markets ecosystem.  To help you learn more about that ecosystem, we organise visits to some of key relationships like RBNZ, or issuers like Z Energy.
  • Support – you’ll be assigned a mentor who has been through the grad programme – to help you settle in and navigate your way through NZX.  You’ll also have an executive sponsor from our senior team, who will help you understand the business and build relationships at the most senior level.
  • A warm welcome – NZX is a social place and there are many opportunities for you to get to know your workmates. Whether it’s a casual summer BBQ for graduates at our CEO’s house or joining an indoor sports team, board game club or quiz night, you’ll find a place you belong.

Your Role
As an NZX graduate you will work as part of a small focused team with the opportunity to work within:
  • The Clearing team, providing front line pre- and post-trade operational support – learning all about how markets operate in practice
  • The Clearing Risk team, where you will learn all about how we use information and data as a part of the risk management of a key piece of national infrastructure
  • The Energy team where you will learn about how the New Zealand’s Electricity Market functions to keep the lights on
  • The Data and Insights team where you will use your data analysis skills to provide insights into what is happening in our markets
  • The Funds Services team where you will have the opportunity to learn about how we operate our funds management businesses, Smartshares or SuperLife
Graduate work includes both day to day tasks that are integral to our services. You will work with experienced, open people, with hands on learning in a supportive team environment.

“We take pride in our awesome, approachable, open, team-oriented culture here at NZX. It’s nothing like the movies so don’t expect Wall Street when you walk through the doors . It’s an inviting environment where building relationships is easy and staff are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise with you – even our CEO who is always up for a chat.”
