As well as the technical legal training, summer clerking also involves a ton of training in technology, personal brand, business writing, file management, and other business skills you’ll need when you enter the workforce.

The Summer Clerk Experience

Discover your passion and follow your intellectual curiosity! As a summer clerk, you will rotate through two different teams, one before Christmas and one after. We try our best to place you in the teams that you're interested in. This will allow you to explore the practice areas that you're curious about.


If you’re in your penultimate year of Law School, you’re eligible to apply for a summer clerkship at Simpson Grierson. Applications open in March each year and you get to choose whether you want to apply to our Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch office. If this sounds like you, don’t hesitate and apply now!

Why is Simpson Grierson different?

When you join as a graduate at Simpson Grierson, you will commence late February and will spend the first three months completing your professional legal studies (profs) until April. Following this, you will begin your graduate experience in one of our amazing teams!

We know that starting a new job is not easy. Because of this, we will assign you a graduate as a buddy. They will show you the ropes and give you inside knowledge as to how our firm works. The experience wouldn’t be complete without some sort of mentorship. As well as your buddy, one of our senior lawyers will act as your supervisor. This person will help you to understand the nature of the work and will coach you through your time during your graduate year.

We give you the tools and knowledge you need to succeed in your profession and you will have access to our professional development program.

When you come back as a Simpson Grierson graduate you will be placed into a team following the completion of your professional courses studies. We try our hardest to place you in the teams that you’re passionate about.

Our People and Culture team will coach and guide you to take a risk, try something new and ultimately find the best fit for you.

Becoming a lawyer

At Simpson Grierson, we know that you take your career seriously so we have a wide network of people to support you at the start of your career.

We have a very comprehensive two-year training program which has been described externally as 'leaps ahead' of our competition. We can help you be the best you can be.

Training will include enrolling you in your “Professional Studies”, the firm will support you while you complete this last part of your academic requirements in order to be admitted to The Bar.
