The Asia New Zealand Foundation invites final year undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in multilateral trade and international diplomacy to apply for an internship in Singapore with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat.

This opportunity is for students specialising in one of the following fields of study: 
  • economics 
  • international trade 
  • international relations 
  • development 
  • statistics
  • law
  • business

The successful applicant will join a small team in the office of the executive director of the APEC Secretariat Tan Sri Datuk Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria – the first woman to lead the APEC Secretariat. 

The intern will have the opportunity to see how APEC works from the inside and gain insights into the work of the region’s premier economic forum tasked with advancing free trade and prosperity in the Asia Pacific.

The internship will take place from late January 2020 to the end of April.


What you'll do 

The intern will be given a specific project or meaningful work to do. A mentoring supervisor will be assigned to monitor the intern’s professional development and overall welfare. 
They will have the opportunity to: 
  • see multilateral trade up close through the lens of APEC senior leadership
  • attend official APEC meetings and support engagement through research and report writing 
  • work with a close-knit office at the centre of the APEC operations 
  • gain unique insights into hosting an APEC year, ahead of New Zealand’s APEC hosting year in 2021. 

What's covered

The Asia New Zealand Foundation will cover the cost of:
  • return airfares to Singapore
  • accommodation
  • travel insurance
  • a stipend to cover living expenses.
The intern will be required to contribute NZ$500 towards their living expenses.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation and APEC will jointly deliver pastoral care and the Foundation will introduce the intern to public and private sector networks in Singapore.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:
  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
  • in good health
  • due to complete at least three years of tertiary study by November 2019
  • adaptable, mature, reliable and resilient
  • willing to experience working in a multilateral organisation in the Asia-Pacific
  • interested in pursuing a career involving the trade and the wider Asian region
  • aspiring to develop their capacity for working in cross-cultural environments.


Terms and Conditions

  • take out appropriate travel insurance (subsidised by the Foundation)
  • contribute $500 to their living costs while offshore
  • contribute a 600-word article with photographs for the Foundation’s website while offshore
  • write a final three-page report evaluating the internship experience
  • participate in Foundation professional development activities and networking events after they return from Singapore.
