This internship is aimed at practicing lawyers under the age of 30 and law students who are interested in international dispute resolution and, in particular, international arbitration.

The Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) is one of the world's leading dispute resolution institutions, specialising in arbitration, mediation, adjudication and domain name disputes resolution. For more information about HKIAC., please visit their website.

About the internship

The internship is for three months, and depending on the successful applicant’s preference, will commence between late November 2019 through February/March 2020. For applicants with greater flexibility, it may be possible to intern at other times of the year, except for July and August.

The successful candidate will be placed at HKIAC’s office in Hong Kong where they will assist the Secretariat in discharging its day-to-day duties. The intern will be assigned to an arbitration counsel who will act as a mentoring supervisor.

Law students and young legal practitioners with an eagerness to learn, an excellent work ethic, and an interest in a career in dispute resolution in Asia are strongly encouraged to apply. Chinese language ability is an advantage but is not required as English is widely used in Hong Kong.

The Foundation is looking to recruit one intern for HKIAC in 2019.

Short-listed applicants, whose applications proceed past the first interview in New Zealand, will be interviewed by an HKIAC representative at the second interview stage of the selection process

Applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or have New Zealand permanent resident status
  • studying at a university or practicing at a law firm in New Zealand when they apply
  • able to demonstrate an interest in a career in international dispute resolution
  • prepared to share their experience via the Foundation’s website and at suitable fora on his/her return to New Zealand
  • willing to participate in Foundation activities following the internship such as panel discussions, round tables and school talks.

What's covered?

The Foundation provides a grant as a subsidy to cover round-trip airfares to and from Hong Kong as well as a financial grant to cover insurance, living expenses, and some accommodation costs. The intern may need to contribute their own funds for accommodation, depending on the type and quality of accommodation they prefer.

Interns at HKIAC generally use online booking services to secure suitable accommodation. Accommodation options will be discussed with the successful applicant prior to departure.

The selected intern will be required to contribute NZ$500 towards covering living and leisure costs (e.g. dining out, entertainment, weekend excursions).
