At Countdown our purpose is to make Kiwi’s lives a little better every day. Our focus is on delivering good prices, good acts, and good food for our customers whilst growing our business. Our ways of working ensure we are always improving by working end-to-end as one team, encouraging freedom within a framework, and keeping things simple.

As a Finance Graduate, you will be joining one of the largest, fastest and most exciting retailers in New Zealand. With 180 stores supported by 4 dry grocery distribution centres, 3 fresh produce distribution centres, 2 meat processing plants, 1 seafood processing plant and a central support office -  running an operation of this scale is no easy feat and our team is responsible for supporting the business in making great financial decisions.

Based in our central support office you will learn about the 5 distinct sectors within finance; Corporate Reporting, Treasury, Property and Project Accounting, Fixed Asset Accounting, and Business Support who work collaboratively with the business to assist and support business decisions as well as ensuring accurate and timely reporting of the financial results. You will get the opportunity to work alongside the different teams and learn about what they do. From reviewing of business cases to ensure good financial outcomes, management of matters pertaining to company income tax and the other tax-related obligations, providing financial services for the property team and maintain the Fixed Assets register for all of the business units you will be encouraged to contribute to our ‘always improving’ culture, by testing and trialling new and innovative ideas.

To be successful as a retail operations graduate we expect you will:

  • Have strong analytical skills and an inquisitive mindset
  • Have a talent for influencing people
  • Have the ability to recognise risk and demonstrate conceptual thinking
  • Have the confidence to work with senior leaders across a range of functions
  • Have the ability to present complex information clearly and simply
  • Be a practical problem solver
  • Have great attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
Your 18-month programme will include rotations in core areas of Finance such as treasury, systems, data, and processes, financial planning, external reporting and tax, and the wider business giving you exposure to invaluable learning experiences and career opportunities.  The final 6-months will be your specialisation period. On completion of your graduate programme, you will move into a permanent role that will support your continued development both personally and professionally.

As a finance graduate, you will help support and shape the future of finance within Countdown!

Finance Grad"The diversity and practicality of experiences in Countdown’s graduate program have given me the perfect start to a career in Finance. From time spent in stores and distribution centres, to projects across multiple teams such as Marketing, Online and Property the end-to-end exposure was second to none. Backed by regular development in my data and analytical skills, the combination of practical and technical development from the Graduate program has been a fantastic introduction to the workforce."
