Details of the 2020 scholarship programme are coming soon.
Are you a great all-rounder looking for a future in a market leading firm?
Do you want financial support, mentoring and work experience in the Christchurch office of one of New Zealand’s largest law firms?
Will you grab the opportunity to learn from some of the best in our specialist fields?
- Litigation and dispute resolution
- Corporate and commercial
- Agribusiness and resource management
- Employment and health and safety
- Private client and trusts.
Relationships are at the heart of what we do. We are looking to give a boost to two University of Canterbury law students who value a firm that offers:
- Down to earth, practical advice;
- Commercial understanding;
- Excellent legal service;
- Access to high-quality work.
To apply you need to be in your third or fourth year of study (with one or two years to complete your degree). We want you to love the Canterbury region and the contribution it makes to our economy as much as we do. We are looking for University of Canterbury students that can demonstrate a wider contribution than just academic results – so if you are an organizer, campaigner, entrepreneur, high performing competitor, speaker or all of these things – this could be for you. And we want people who see their future in a big firm with a difference.
As the recipient of a Duncan Cotterill law scholarship you will receive:
- $3,000 per year towards your study while you complete your law degree.
- Summer and winter clerking opportunities at our Christchurch office while you’re studying.
- Dedicated partner and peer support.
- Invitations to our social and educational programs throughout the year.
Our lawyers come from all backgrounds. Some are our home-grown graduates. Others have worked in the largest law firms in the world. We advise on some of the most rewarding files in the market, in a progressive and supportive firm. All the things you expect are here – a great social programme, comprehensive training both internal and external, access to the highest quality resources, opportunities to network with peers in other professional firms and support to give to pro-bono and community activities.
We know training is important – so we provide in house, external and on the job opportunities. Our graduates and solicitors have comprehensive training programmes, tailored to their needs. Our practice groups hold regular forums to discuss legal issues with lawyers at all levels. And we provide a tailored development programme for our most senior lawyers. Plus we have regular lunch and learn sessions from our experienced lawyers.
But it’s not all work. Our employees get involved in a full range of social events - from touch rugby to yoga, book groups to tennis, ski days and mountain biking trips. We encourage community work – you will find us cooking for Ronald McDonald House, tree planting at the Halswell Quarry Park and providing pro bono support for a variety of community events.
We want to share our experience and the way we do law at Duncan Cotterill. For 160 years we have been mentoring aspiring lawyers and helping them step up into practice. Let us help you on your journey – and join our success.
