  • Want to be part of the restart?
  • Do you connect and work well with others?
  • Are you a self-starter who enjoys a challenge?

If you said yes to the above questions, and are interested in a community driven career within the public sector where people are at the heart of what you do, then start your career with the GovTechTalent graduate programme!

It's a time of unprecedented change and the government is redesigning its services and processes so that it can better serve its customers. We are looking for recent graduates from all degree backgrounds, or those about to graduate, who truly want to make a difference to New Zealand. We want graduates with leadership capabilities, who are future-focused, caring and wish to shape New Zealand in an increasingly connected world to play a role in enhancing the public sector.

What is the programme all about?

GovTechTalent is a graduate programme that enhances the digital capabilities of New Zealand public services through the development of the digital leaders of tomorrow. It's based in Wellington and graduates spend 24 months rotating through three participating agencies, spending eight months at each agency as part of a cohort spread across the public sector. This means you develop a broader and deeper understanding of the way government works. Participating agencies can include: Department of Internal Affairs; ACC; Ministry of Education; Inland Revenue; Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment; Ministry for Primary Industries; Statistics NZ and New Zealand Transport Agency.  Working in digital is about improving the lives of everyday New Zealanders - tackling real-world problems such as running households, using public transport, driving our roads, infrastructure, security, healthcare, and the environment. GovTechTalent graduates bring new perspectives, ideas and skills to help navigate our increasingly complex world.

Sounds interesting - what skills are you looking for?

We want curious graduates who share a passion for improving the lives of New Zealanders - who like a challenge, try new things, ask questions and have the courage required to design the future. You do not have to be an expert in government, digital or IT industries - we are more interested in people who are interested in people! Graduates are selected representing diversity in thought, experience and skills - we look for behaviours over technical knowledge. Some personal strengths we value are:

  • Curiosity
  • Courage
  • Collaboration
  • Being caring
  • Being community-driven
  • Initiative
  • Being future-focused

In return, successful graduates are offered:

  • Freedom to explore passions and interests
  • Exposure to different business areas, projects, areas of interest, and ways of working
  • Technical and personal development to align with career aspirations
  • Work on meaningful and challenging projects

We don't expect you to know everything now - one key benefit the programme will offer you is increasing your knowledge while supporting your career pathway.  So if you're struggling to decide which graduate programme to apply for, we'll make it easy for you. GovTechTalent gives you the opportunity to truly make a difference and has the variety you want too - so don't get FOMO and apply for GovTechTalent today!

Please note - to be considered for this programme, you must:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Be living in or willing to relocate yourself to Wellington
  • Have graduated with (at minimum) a Bachelor's degree within the last 24 months or be due to graduate in 2020
