Overview

Mainfreight

The Future Leaders Programme offers you an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in the diverse and fast-paced global industry that is Mainfreight! We aim to give a great depth of understanding and practical knowledge that can help shape and mould you into one of our successful future leaders. Think you have got what it takes?

Who are we?

We're a business that's as much about problem-solving for our customers as we are about physically moving their freight. Today our business revolves around clever thinking, smart technologies, international logistics and above all, people.

We manage the worldwide transport, logistics and distribution for our customers, getting their products from a point of origin into the hands of their consumers. We handle everything from perishable food and flowers to heavy duty machinery, wine – even designer cycling gear!

Future Leaders Programme

Our programme is open to School Leavers and Graduates and we are not like your average programme. We believe in giving everyone a practical and hands-on learning experience in order to really understand the nuts and bolts of the company. This is a real job where your contribution and team effort can make a real difference. You begin working on the floor, at the core of our business. It allows you to experience the Mainfreight culture, understand the inner workings of the company, be a part of a team, and a vital cog in the Mainfreight blue machine.

Learning the company by being part of the operations, literally means starting in the depot or the warehouse and handling freight. We are not bound by rigid rotations; we don’t hold your hand but give support and guidance to where you want to head. There is a lot of freedom and flexibility to carve out your own career path with the support from mentors, Branch Managers and other team members!

When can I start?

At Mainfreight, we work on rolling recruitment. This means that we do not have set start intake dates for our Future Leaders Programme, when an opportunity becomes available with our team, we need great people to fill it as soon as possible! We take on School Leavers and Graduates all throughout the whole year and try to match opportunities with our team to when you finish your studies. It is a good idea to send your application in a few months before you finish at school or university.

  • If you are graduating at the end of the year, first have a look through our websites and videos and learn about our business and the Future Leaders Programme. Closer to when you do finish your studies you can then send in your CV and Cover Letter, we will have a better understanding what opportunities are available in our branches.
  •  If you are in your final semester or have already graduated, send in your application now and we can place you almost immediately, given you have the Mainfreight qualities we are looking for.

Where in the world are we?

With the world’s trading marketplace becoming more and more global, demand for Mainfreight’s services has never been higher. We’re opening up in new cities and new countries around the world, every few months.

A career with Mainfreight has the scope to take you to any part of our business in any one of these regions below.

We’re on a whirlwind journey – and we’re looking for talented, energetic people who can learn fast, grow and ultimately, lead our business into the future.

Are you up for it?

If you finish at the end of the academic year (November/December), we recommend sending in your application in August/September. Our Branch Managers have their fingers on the pulse of their business which means once they’ve identified an opportunity they want to fill it as soon as possible. There are always opportunities available at the end of the year as we head into our busiest period.

Keep an eye out on NxtStep for when applications are open.

Application Process

At Mainfreight, we’re about making the application process as simple, straight-forward and as personal as possible. We do not do personality testing or aptitude assessments but instead we have a straight forward interview process to get to know you and finding out whether Mainfreight is a good fit for you and you fit our values, culture and our Mainfreight way of life.

Apply!
As they say, you have to be in to win. Send us your CV and Cover Letter when applications open on NxtStep or straight through to our website careers@mainfreight.co.nz

Phone interview.
Whether it’s a “yes” or a “no” from your initial application, you will hear back from us pretty soon. If it is a “yes” we will schedule in a time for a phone interview. The phone interview is a chance for us to meet you personally and not just as a written application and give you more of an overview of life on the Future Leaders Programme, as well as answer any of your questions.

Face to Face Interview.
Whether in person or by Skype, this is where we get to know you better. This will be more of a formal interview and is the chance to sell yourself and show us you are a good Mainfreight fit and that you are excited and passionate to join our team.

Branch Manager Interview.
You’ve made the shortlist and this is the final step! Ultimately our Branch Managers have the final say so they want to get to know you. They will want to identify if you’re the right fit for their branch and the opportunity they have available. This is your chance to ask any questions about your potential role, responsibilities, what shift you will be working on, and what teams you will be working with.

Pre-Checks.
If you impress our Branch Managers you will also need to pass a Pre-employment Background Check and Drug and Alcohol Test before joining the Mainfreight team.
