What's it all about?

HeyFuture! is a hands on, two-week course that prepares 18-22 year olds for the future.

A range of speakers, workshops and a real-life industry project will build skills, confidence and real-life experience across a range of areas including problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, curiosity, perseverance and ‘getting stuff done’.

Participants will get the opportunity to meet people from amazing NZ and international companies who are looking to hire work-ready young people – while tackling some of the big lofty questions of today. After two weeks, you’ll be set with a bunch of new skills, connections and a clear idea about what to do next.

What you'll walk away with

The programme is designed to help you find your personal purpose in order to navigate your next steps, and gain practical skills to kickstart that journey. We consider the impact of technological change, climate change, globalisation, and how this shapes the future of work, to prepare you for what’s out there. The speakers and activities we’ve assembled cover these key topics:

Sustainability

An understanding of how to take environmental impacts into consideration in a range of scenarios.

Collaboration

Real-life experience of the combined benefit of diversity of thought, inspiration, tools and techniques to solve a business challenge.

Creativity & curiosity

The recognition that these skills are a superpower, and everyone can have them.

Developing the most sought-after skill required by employers today, tick!

Experience with digital innovations to grow your portfolio and skillset.

Frances Valintine, founder of The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab

Frances Valintine CNZM is a thought-leader in emerging and disruptive technologies and has 20 years’ experience across business, technology and education.

Rich Rowley, Innovation Advisor at Tech Futures Lab

With a background in law and education, Rich has become our resident champion of change and neurodiversity, specialising in challenging and disrupting the status quo.

Te Mihinga Komene, Pou Ārahi at The Mind Lab

Te Mihinga is passionate and committed to the revitalisation of reo Māori in education. She specialises in language, grammar and vocabulary, and using digital tools to enhance and support te reo Māori learning and teaching.

Taurean Butler, Innovation Advisor at Tech Futures Lab

Research orientated, and hailing from New York, he has worked as a designer and product manager to develop products grounded in understanding and empathising with humans. He’s curious, yet methodical and statistically minded.

Priti Ambani, Director of New Business & Innovation at Tata Consultancy Services

Priti Ambani is an engineer, entrepreneur and educator. Priti has led initiatives and startup ventures that leverage the dynamics of digital collaboration and emerging disruptive technologies to create thriving societies.

Karl Sheridan, Creative Director and Founder of Monster Valley

Karl founded creative agency and production studio, Monster Valley and is a huge advocate for the arts scene in Aotearoa. His studio on Auckland's Karangahape Road is also a gallery space and regularly hosts events.

James McLeod, Co-Founder of Made4Baby Natural Skincare

The son of a Wairarapa farmer, James dropped out of uni after 6 months, worked for Telecom (aka Spark), and found himself in marketing. He's lived and worked all around the world, and cofounded Made4Baby Natural Skincare, currently selling in 8 countries around the world.

Fiona (Fee) Webby, General Manager at The Mind Lab

Fee has been with The Mind Lab since 2015 and leads the team here with passion and purpose. With years of experience in advertising and marketing, Fee made the leap to a 'for good' role and has never looked back.

Ellie Harwood, Social Media Manager for Viva La Dirt League

Ellie grew up in East Auckland and after studying at Waikato Uni with a Bachelors degree in Psychology, ended up working at ZM as an award-winning producer on Bree & Clint's drive show. She's now social media manager (and actor) for the popular YouTube channel, Viva La Dirt League.

Murray Streets, Managing Director of Dentsu New Zealand

Murray started his early career as a Latin and Ancient Greek high school teacher, before shifting to advertising. He's committed to a culture that promotes self-awareness, personal purpose, diversity and mental and physical wellbeing.

Morgan Bailey, Head of Communications at Rocket Lab

Morgan has worked with Rocket Lab since the unveiling of the Electron orbital launch vehicle program in 2014, and has a deep understanding of the global space launch industry and New Zealand's evolving role within it.

Courtney Simpson, Group Manager Sustainability at Genesis

Courtney leads the sustainability programme at Genesis with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, science-based targets to limit warming to 1.5C and Genesis’ community investment programmes. Courtney has a MSc, MBA and recently started her PhD in carbon markets.

Scholarships

We have a range of full scholarships available for HeyFuture! provided by The Mind Lab and some of our incredible partners.

  1. The Mind Lab Navigation Scholarship – for an 18-22 year old with a wandering soul, who’s looking for direction to set them on their path.
  2. Dentsu New Zealand Scholarship – one of our partners, Dentsu New Zealand, is offering two full scholarships for 18-22 year olds of Māori or Pasifika descent.
