NIWA's Lauder Atmospheric Research Laboratory in Central Otago undertakes systematic atmospheric composition and radiation measurements using a wide range of in situ and remote-sensing instrumentation as part of New Zealand's contribution to international efforts to understand the atmosphere and climate. This position will provide general technical support for the atmospheric measurement programme, including carrying out atmospheric measurements, calibrating and maintaining scientific equipment and processing and managing measurement data. It may also encompass computer programming for real-time applications such as data quality validation tools and programming utilities for data processing and analysis.
Candidates should have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in science, technology or engineering. They should be experienced with complex scientific instruments and laboratory operations. Meticulous laboratory, analytical, computing and data management skills and excellent quality control practices are required. They should be confident with leading the development of new methods and be familiar with safe laboratory practices. A demonstrated ability to work with computers and computer-run instruments is also required, and experience with electronics troubleshooting would be an advantage. Candidates should show initiative and be adaptable, with the ability to re-configure procedures and experiments.
Candidates must possess strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and show high levels of judgment and adaptability. The position requires an ability to work in a team environment, to develop positive working relationships, to be well-organised, focused on quality and adept at problem solving. The position involves occasional night work operating LIDARs and may also require travel to other measurement locations in New Zealand and Antarctica.
