Transpower has a unique role as owner and operator of the National Grid - the high voltage transmission network that carries clean, green electricity around the country.
To help New Zealand transition to a low emissions economy and reduce the impacts of climate change, the demand for accelerated electrification is growing, increasing the requirement for electricity transmission services.
There are significant challenges and opportunities in helping enable Aotearoa's energy future. This makes for meaningful mahi that will impact for generations to come.
Our transmission assets include nearly 12,000km of high voltage lines, 60km of underground and submarine cable, over 40,000 supporting towers and poles, over 175 substations, and nearly 2000 transformers which are situated the length and breadth of the country. The considered engineering and asset management decisions we make today, tomorrow and in the future will help deliver a low carbon energy future.

Opportunities as a Transpower Graduate

Based at our Waikoukou Wellington Head Office, you'll form enduring relationships across Transpower, learning as you work in different divisions and out in the field. 
Completing placements with a range of teams will build your experience and confidence as you undertake work that really matters.  You'll broaden your knowledge of what we do, and how we work together at Transpower and collaboratively across the sector.
The two-year Graduate rotational programme gives an outstanding view of the different areas and teams in our business.  Carrying out varied tasks and exploring roles will create understanding of what you enjoy most and help progress a career you'll love.
To be considered, your application including cover letter will demonstrate:
  • You're finishing a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree - Mechanical/ Civil or other relevant discipline in 2021 (or have graduated within the last year)
  • A grade point average of 6 or B+ average or higher
  • Great communication (both written and verbal), relationship management, and influencing skills
  • Good analytical skills and the passion, flexibility and resilience required for problem-solving
  • The desire to take an organisation-wide view of opportunities and challenges and to work as part of a team, bringing people together
  • Work or volunteer experience which demonstrates future potential as a leader
  • While not essential, please share with us if you have any of the following:

  • A basic knowledge of, or exposure to, the electricity supply industry or energy sector
  • Any understanding transmission line design, construction, operation and maintenance
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence (required for field-based placements)
You'll require an existing New Zealand work visa if you're not a permanent citizen or resident of New Zealand.
